Google has the ability to increase search engine ranking and it only makes sense that their own users would have the advantage of their expertise.

Go figure… the giant of the search engine world, Google, has come up with a way to incorporate social media with search engine optimization. Their plan is working and may cause a real upset in the social media world, especially where businesses are concerned.

PageRank, a brainchild of Google, allowed Google users to see the very best results in their searches. Since votes for rank relied on a whole page’s vote, that method has needed tweaking, since social media has changed the way we search from looking for whole pages to finding posts, blog entries, pictures, videos, and other smaller pieces of a page that are relevant to what is being searched for.

When that changed, of course Google was quick to change the way they do business, too. They developed their own form of social media page that closely mimics the other highly successful one – Facebook. They chose not to reinvent the wheel, but to simply make it better, easier to negotiate, edit and publish, and they improved the way each item or post is ranked in their search engine. In fact, they also integrated the Twitter system into how they operate. They have come up with a way to entice business to utilize and seek better search engine ranking by using their social media option.

Google is Watching User Habits

The plan may be to incorporate the Google Plus social media users’ habits into their algorithm for ranking. They have a gigantic data base through AdWords and all of the other arms with which they reach into just about every aspect of the internet experience and they can use that influence to increase search ranking for their users.

One click is all it takes to access the new Timeline feature on Facebook. You’ll have a full week to edit through your page and get it just right before you publish it and take it live.

Keeping up with the latest features on Facebook is crucial to your social media success. When they offer a new way to communicate with fans and friends, it’s wise to check out the process, cruise around and see what it looks like on other pages, and then preview it for your own page. They make it really easy to transform your standard page into the new Timeline interface page.

Find the button that says ‘Get Timeline’ and click on it (or go to Facebook.com/timeline). Don’t worry. You’ll have a full week to preview it and to tweak it to your specifications before it goes public. Nobody will be able to see the Timeline pages except you until you are ready to show it off. When it looks like what you envision and is ready to be published, simply click the button that enables the ‘publish now.’ At that point it will be visible to all who visit your page.

Edit Before Publishing

If you believe that there will be no need to change or edit anything before you go public with the Timeline, simply click the ‘Get Timeline’ button, and then click the ‘Publish Now’ button. It’s really that simple. This is fine for those who just want to change the configuration of your page to reflect the latest options.

To edit before publishing, go to the ‘About Timeline.’ Click on ‘Get Timeline’ from that page. A business presence will always require more care, so you can use your 7 day edit period to fix anything you want to look different, or to give the page a better and more professional look. Use the week you have before publishing to edit the page, set your privacy settings, and make your determinations for which items will be seen by any and all and which will be exclusively seen by your closest friends and family.

To edit, simply scroll through your page and remove or edit anything you wish to change. A dropdown menu will come up if you roll your cursor over the item you want to change at the upper right corner of the item. Choose the action from the options. You can change or add locations, change dates, or even make certain items disappear or hide.

Some posts can be featured if you wish by clicking on the star next to the pencil icon at the left of the item. That item will become larger and more obvious. When you’ve finished and are satisfied with your edits, simply press the ‘Publish Now’ button and your new Facebook Timeline page will be live.

Using Tweets as communication has become mainstream and expected among those who are young, electronically connected, and creative. Article directories were a good way for webmasters to promote their websites. Article and Web Directory submissions with high Pageranks ultimately helped your site by increase exposure and traffic and Pagerank because of a backlink from a another site with a high Pagerank….. a year ago.

Google made it perfectly clear. They are trying their darnedest to punish sites that use black hat SEO techniques. Backlinks from directories are not as important as the quality of the information, how it is written and how it is shared.

It is our educated theory that links from article directories are no-where near as powerful as they once were. Most article directories are notorious for the amount of low-quality content they contain. They’ll accept articles from just about anyone – regardless of how poorly written the articles are. That being said, despite being smacked down by the Panda update, EzineArticles has consistently had the highest quality standards among article directories. And after Panda, they’ve tightened their quality standards even more and maybe, because of that they may bounce back.

Social Media has Changed the Game

With the explosion of Social Media, the share, the like and the re-tweet could now be trumping the ever important backlink. Though, at this time, Google will deny that they use Social Media likes and shares in their algorithms, though anyone using Google Analytics can see that Google keeps track of all the likes and shares.

Even though we still get well over 80% of our traffic from Google and not Social Media, we feel strongly that their is a direct correlation between the two. For example, if you can get 100 more visits from Social Media sites to your website or blog, it has to help your Search Engine Ranking. For the most part, the traffic from Social Media is very targeted traffic, thus will stay on your pages longer. It just has to help.

Several months ago we stopped posting to article sites and submit our content directly to our blog, share it on Social Media and as a result, it hasn’t hurt our traffic nor our Pagerank by not having the backlinks from high Pagerank article sites. In fact, the contrary has occured, it has helped our Pagerank.

Sharing quality content in Social Media, in our opinion, is the equivalent of a good backlink. By sharing high quality content from people with a high Social Score, it will help get YOUR image and message sent through cyber-space quickly.

We have said it before and we will say it again;

“In the very near future backlinks, keywords and key phrases placed in content, while important, will no longer be the gold standard in optimizing content.“

When gathering data, it is important to look beyond simple counting and look at how engaged people are with the content that you are sharing with them!

Why should you care? Your social score will become more available and important to everyone from banks to vendors. Do you read up on Kelley Blue Book values and check the company website for every spec, from horsepower to miles per gallon? What about music? When it comes to social media and it’s influence, we all have questions, we want to know things like:

• Who are the people we should be communicating with? And where are they?
• How do we know what we’re doing is working?
• What is social influence based on and do we have any?
